Chapter 1
1. What problems or conflicts are presented in chapter one? Tao needing to find a rabbit is an obvious one; identify at least two more.
2. Predict the resolution of each conflict.

1.Tao loves art and isn't a a good hunter.For that nobody respects him for that.
2.I think Tao's creative mind is going to help his tribe.

Chapter 2
What two important events happen in this chapter?
1.Tao is living in the meadows as a form of punishment ordered by his tribe.He got punished for losing his rabbit. Volt ordered Tao to find the rabbit. He is about to go through the dark forest where he thinks he hears an evil spirit.

Chapter 3
1. What do Tao and Ram learn to do together?

2. What decision does Tao tell Volt?

3. Look at Tao's decisions and actions from Volt's perspective. Pretend you are Volt. Write a first person paragraph explaining how you feel.

1. Tao and Ram learned how to hunt together.
2.Tao tells Volt that he wants to to hunt by himself.
3.I cannot beleive that Tao has the urge to disobey me. I specificaly told him to hunt with the tribe. He thinks too much of himself. I have to worry about getting food and this is not helping. I cannot do anything to change his stubborness. I hope someday Tao will listen to other people besides himself.

1. Tao never knew his mother until Kala told him. His mother was named Vedra. She was a brave person. Tao was supposed to be killed but his mother protected him. She bit, screamed, and basically just did anything possible to protect Tao. Kala said referring to Vedra,"She was only a girl,but she had the sense and wisdom of a woman."

1. Tao trys to draw a horse and Ram, the wolf dog.
2. Ram, the wolf dog is easier to draw because the wolf dog is right in front of him.

1. Graybeard knew that Tao was hunting in the Slough and was hunting with Ram.

Chapter 7

1. I agree with Graybeard's decision because even though he knows how much Tao loves art he still has to follow the laws of the clans. It was true back then,but not today. Now we can draw and paint with out anybody thinking it is taboo.

Chapter 8
An important theme in this novel is that people should follow their dreams and do what they believe is right, even if they don't follow their society's expected ways.
The author examines this theme in a stone age setting. Imagine a similar situation today.

1. In the situation I imagined I was thinking about how women who want to be police,but society thinks it is taboo. I think that the women who want to be police should because they ndeserve to follow their dreams.

1. I think Graybeard changed his mind ,because he saw how much Tao wanted to learn how to draw.
2. This shows that Graybeard is a kind, flexible person.

1. The "mountains- that- walk are wooly mammoths.

1. I think Graybeard is a good teacher because he is avery good at what he does.
2. I would like to have Graybeard teach a skill to me,because he would make me work hard.

Chapter 12

2. Why is Tao afraid at the end of the chapter?

1.The paint was made out of fish oil, yellow clay, bright red earth, limestone powder, honey, blood froma boar, and fat from a boar.
2. I was suprised that the paint was made out of honey.

Chapter 13
1. Even if Ram had succeeded in hunting the deer, do you think it was a good idea of Tao's to "show off" his dog's ability to hunt? Explain.
2. Predict what will happen next. If you've read ahead, invent an alternate scene.

1. I think it wasn't a good idea, because even if Ram succeded Volt would still want to kill Ram, because Volt thinks that wolf dogs are evil.
2. I think Tam and Tao will see each other in the moountain village. They will find Graybeard there.

Chapter 14
1. Why does Tao cross the river?
2. What decision does Graybeard reach?

1. Tao crossed the river, because he was afraid that something had happened to Ram.
2. Graybeard decided that Ram and Tao could go free. Graybeard also told Tao that he was going to paint in the secret caverns.

What problem does Tao have by the end of the chapter?

1. Tao doesn't know which path to go in order to get to the secret cavern.

Wow! What a chapter! What was your reaction? Tense? Surprised? You predicted it? Write a paragraph describing your reaction.

1. I was suprised that Graybeard was dead. A lot of things suprised me in the chapter. I cannot believe that Volt was Tao's father. I knew that in a way Volt wanted to save Tao, because deep in his heart he kind of liked Tao. Overall this book was very good.
